Galván Might Arrive Before July, but Don’t Bet On It

Multiple reports surfaced out of Argentina this week suggesting that the Colorado Rapids participated a meeting with representatives of Club Atlético Colón to discuss the early sale of Braian Galván. The Argentinian Youth International will join the Rapids when his contract expires in July at the latest, regardless of what’s ultimately decided in a series of talks reportedly held in Miami, FL.

After their hastily-constructed appeal to FIFA seemingly fell on deaf ears, Los Sabaleros are eager to come to terms to avoid losing one of their marquee prospects without a dime to show for him. However, quite a few factors are working against an early agreement.

For one, the Rapids aren’t particularly stretched for support on the wings at the moment. With Nicolas Benezet, Jonathan Lewis, Sam Nicholson, Andre Shinyashiki, Matt Hundley, and Sebastian Anderson capable of putting in a shift out wide, the Rapids aren’t desperate to get a deal over the line before the start of the season.

Another issue for consideration is Colón’s rumored asking price of $500,000 for the winger’s early release. Such a move would reportedly make Galván a Designated Player – a distinction that could potentially hinder the Rapids from bringing in additional support during the Secondary Transfer Window. If Colorado isn’t particularly frustrated for help out wide at the moment (and that does seem to pass scrutiny), there’s not a compelling reason to splash the cash right away.

Finally, even if Colorado manages to close a deal and keep the total transfer cost under the DP threshold, Galván would still need time to integrate with the first team. With preseason quickly approaching its conclusion, the best opportunity to get the winger synced-up with the rest of the squad has already passed.

These concerns don’t make a deal inherently impossible. The Primary Transfer Window doesn’t shut until May 5, so the Rapids still have quite a bit of time to bring Galván aboard early. However, Colorado’s well-positioned to wait. Unless Colón suddenly drop their asking price, I doubt we see significant movement before July.

No doubt that the Rapids hold the upper hand in this negotiation. They have depth at winger and have Galván under contract come July. So it would seem that they can offer less, perhaps a lot less, than $500,000 in a transfer fee.

Speaking of winger, I wonder if one of the current members of the roster might be transferred or traded should Galván be able to push for serious playing time – once he become acclimated? It looks like the Rapids have accrued some good talent on the wings.

    • Certainly a transfer is possible, but I don’t think it’s something pressing or anything that might happen this season. That said, if the Rapids have a winger that just isn’t getting on the field, it would make sense to move them on. Really depends on how minutes get allocated.
