Season in a Sentence
Colorado’s 2019 Golden Boot winner improved in his second MLS season but still didn’t deliver performances worthy of re-upping his $600,000 contract.
Performance Review
While Lalas Abubakar, Keegan Rosenberry, and Sam Vines all excelled in Colorado’s post-Hudson defenses, Tommy Smith remained the weakest link in the back four. The New Zealand International wasn’t a liability in defense, but still underperformed in every statistical category for the club.
Future Expectations
The Rapids attempted to negotiate a lower deal with Tommy Smith before acquiring Auston Trusty, but ultimately couldn’t come to terms with the defender. Colorado will miss Smith’s aerial presence on corners – two of his three goals secured wins in 2019 – but investing in a high-upside domestic talent like Trusty seems like a better decision than over-paying for average play.
