Season in a Sentence
Tim Howard’s retirement season mirrored his four seasons with Colorado: some good, some bad, and probably not worth it in the end.
Performance Review
When judging a player whose salary ranks among the highest in the league and takes up a coveted roster position, there are greater expectations at play. Howard was a very serviceable goalkeeper for the Rapids when he took the field in 2019, but he was just that – serviceable.
Statistically Howard hovered around the middle of the pack of MLS keepers. When a recurring injury gave Clint Irwin a chance to make eleven starts in the back half of the season, it became clear that the Rapids could get similar value at the position for significantly less.
Future Expectations
At the beginning of the year, Tim Howard announced his intent to retire following his final year contracted with the Rapids and played his final match in Colorado’s 3-1 loss to Los Angeles F.C. Irwin is expected to be first choice in 2020.
