General Manager Pádraig Smith revealed Thursday that the Colorado Rapids have signed academy player Cole Bassett to a full-time contract. The announcement was made during a live question and answer session that the club hosted at Odell Brewing Company in downtown Denver. Colorado has yet to reveal the specifics of the contract offered.
Bassett, 17, joined the Rapids Developmental Academy from the Colorado Rush academy in 2017. Smith spoke highly of the talented midfielder, describing Bassett as “the best player” in his age group.
Bassett scored nine goals over the course of the current academy season and featured four times for the Rapids’ Under-23 squad. Bassett started in the U-23’s playoff loss to Calgary Foothills F.C., the eventual winners of the competition.
Update 8/10/18: Bassett’s contract is for four-and-a-half years, according to a press release sent out by the Rapids. Bassett was introduced to the media Friday afternoon and chose jersey number 26.
