Colorado Rapids have made their first acquisition of the 2018 summer transfer window by signing Jamaican forward Giles Barnes.

An experienced MLS player – with stints at Houston, Vancouver, and Orlando City – Barnes comes to Colorado “on a six-month deal with a club option for 2019 pending receipt of his [International Transfer Certificate].”

The forward “has 19 international appearances for the Jamaican National Team,” and U.S. Men’s National Team fans will surely recognize the name of the player who scored the game-winning goal against the Yanks in the semi-final of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This signing immediately follows the release of forward Joe Mason, who returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers after being waived by Colorado – perhaps signaling that the Rapids are looking to reshape their attack.

Rumors of Barnes’ move to the Rapids surfaced earlier in the week and intensified when the attacker was released from Liga MX’s Club León Friday morning.

Rapids supporters might be wary of Barnes’ ability to produce for the side. Barnes, 29, only appeared in three cup matches for León and failed to find the back of the net during his time at the club. While it remains to be seen whether or not Barnes can still play at an MLS-level, a six-month deal seems to indicate that the Rapids’ see Barnes as a move to improve the squad’s depth in the short-term.
