The Colorado Rapids are attempting to address their attack during the summer transfer window by cutting Joe Mason and signing Giles Barnes, according to MLSsoccer.com writer Sam Stejskal.

Joe Mason – on loan at Colorado Rapids from Wolverhampton Wanderers – appeared in fourteen matches and scored three goals across all competitions for the Rapids. According to Stejskal, Mason was waived by the club “earlier in week” and “is returning to Wolverhampton.” Mason’s production rarely seemed to justify his salary of nearly $700,000 to Colorado’s supporters, who have been demanding wholesale changes to the side after a difficult start to the 2018 campaign.

Mason’s departure opens up another spot in the squad for an attacker and Stejskal says “Colorado are close to signing” experienced MLS attacker Giles Barnes as a replacement. The Jamaican front-man has yet to record an league appearance for Club León since moving to the Mexican side in January this year and likely desires more playing time.

If signed, Barnes will hope to return to his 2014 form where he scored eleven goals and secured five assists for Houston Dynamo – a feat he was unable to replicate while applying his trade for Vancouver Whitecaps and Orlando City.

Update 1: Colorado has since officially confirmed that Joe Mason has departed the club.

Update 2: Wolverhampton Wanderers has also confirmed that Joe Mason will report back to their club on Friday.
